Plan International Canada is a branch of the relief organization Plan International and also one of the best nonprofit organizations in Canada, Plan International was formed in 1937, and then it came into Canada in the 1980s.

During the Spanish civil war in 1937, thousands of refugees were passing through Santander railway station; most of which were orphaned children, among them was a young boy who has a note in his hand which was written by his father; the note reads thus: “This is José. I am his father. When Santander falls I shall be shot. Whoever finds my son, I beg of him to take care of him for my sake.”

This boy was found by John Langdon-Davies, a British journalist and when he saw the note he was moved to found an organization known as ‘Foster Parents Plan for Children in Spain’ to help children disrupted by the war.

Interestingly; over the years this organization metamorphosed into a world-famous group with many national and international branches and became one of the biggest nonprofit organizations in Canada and other parts of the world.

  1. Interesting article – what I don’t understand is that CRA defines that a charity can not be a non profit. One or the other, and yet for instance the Canadian Cancer Society reference says it’s both and they refer to themselves as both. I wish the legality of that was adhered to. It gets very muddy when they can take in millions and use 15 cents on the dollar and equate themselves with those that fit the true CRA definition of a non profit. Semantics matter here when people are asked to donate, or seeking advice on where to donate.

  2. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about
this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home
a little bit, but other than that, this is magnificent blog.
An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.
