Water treatment companies in India have a quest at hand and that is to significantly reduce the water demand in the nation through efficiently treating wastewater including industrial and agricultural effluents.
India today has a population of over 1.3 billion people making it the second-largest country before China. In the next five years, India is expected to surpass China to become the most populous country in the world.
With this overpopulation, there is always a huge demand for an essential resource-Water. India is now facing a huge water crisis due to some pressing factors.
India’s water problem which is a perennial crisis has been linked to a lack of proper government planning, increased corporate privatization, increased corporate privatization, increased corruption, and a general increase in industrial and human waste.
According to Spotlight India,
“Water scarcity in india is expected to worsen as the overall population is expected to increase to 1.6 billion by year 2030.”
According to water.org,
“The World Bank estimates that 21 percent of infectious diseases in India are linked to unsafe water and unhygienic practices. Further, about 500 children under five die every day from diarrhea in India alone.”
According to Deloitte,
“The rural sanitation market in India is worth the US $25 billion. Water is the new sector for businesses to take advantage of the water scarcity situation in India, as there is a vast potential to grow the water-related business in India.”
Around 40 % of India’s population which amounts to close to 600 million people is predicted to have low access to drinking water by the year 2030 if changes aren’t made to the country’s water management.
India’s water planning agency has named this the worst water crisis in India’s history the first issue contributing to India’s water problem is the fact that groundwater in India is running out fast.
40% of India’s drinking water supply comes from groundwater which was predicted to run out for 21 major Indian major cities by 2020.
Most houses particularly rural houses do not have access to water to drink on-premises and would have to run to wells to obtain safe drinking water.
For many families who are living in arid or semi-arid rural areas, the drinking water for the week is only 8 liters compared to over 100 liters drunk by the average 4-person American household not only is the water-scarce.
But it’s naturally expensive as a result a small tank of water can cost as much as 900 rupees which is equal to around 12 US dollars. This may not seem like much but the average rural family earns only around 800 rupees or 10 US dollars per week.
Due to this water crisis and miss allocation of water caused mainly by climate change, the source of water has gradually shifted to surface water.
But this issue here is that about 70% of these surface waters which could have been a better alternative are polluted with pollutants of some kind and India’s water quality index is ranked as low as 120 among 122 countries.
Being the second-most populous country in the world with about 1 billion citizens and more than half of her citizens practicing open defecation, India faces a serious water problem.
Most water pollution is through sewage, agricultural and chemical run-offs, effluent from factories, and unregulated dumping by businesses. Other contaminants include arsenic and fluoride. This has caused the death rate in India to be about 400,000 deaths per year.
The Indian government has taken many measures to increase the availability of safe drinking water; one of the measures is to certify or establish water treatment plants or companies in India.
The demand is high compared to the natural supply of potable water. This puts the country in a demand for water treatment services and facilities.
What is Water Treatment?
According to Wikipedia,
Water treatment is any process that improves the quality of water to make it appropriate for a specific end-use. The end use may be drinking, industrial water supply, irrigation, river flow maintenance, water recreation or many other uses, including being safely returned to the environment.
Treatment of water and wastewater agricultural and industrial activities has proven to be one of the ways India can tackle their water crisis.
Many companies both indigenous and foreign along with the ones set up by the government have been established for the treatment of these polluted surface waters. This is because the government has seen what can be done through water treatment companies in India.
Though, more work is yet to be done, here are some of the water treatment companies in India.
