1. Deutsche Bracke

Deutsche Bracke is on our list of animals that start with D. Is a domesticated animal and its scientifical name is Canis lupus Familiaris native to Westphalia, a region of northwestern Germany. Is a breed of dog that is used for hunting both small and large games.

Small dogs of about 16 – 21 ins with a hard coat, are not popular outside their native land and are family pets. They are one of the oldest breeds and they have a sharp sense of smell which made them a highly regarded hunting breed in Germany.

They are very smart, calm, and intelligent, and love people around them. When they are indoors they blossom more than where they lived traditionally which is in outdoor kennels. They are not on the list of endangered species.

2. Douc

They are commonly found in Southeast Asa Indochina precisely and They are made up of 3 species which are gray-shanked douc,  black-shanked douc, and red-shanked douc.

Can be also called langur with their coat which is gray, white, and red shades. They are considered to be among the most colorful monkeys in the world.

The douc langur is critically endangered because it was affected excessively during the Vietnam War. They have not yet replenished.

3. Dolphin


Dophin belongs to the Delphinidae, Pontoporiidae, Iniidae, extinct Lipotidae, and Platanistidae. It is an aquatic mammal. They are commonly seen in the oceans and seas.

There are about 40 surviving species that are named dolphins and it is considered to be a critically endangered specie.

4. Dhole


Dhole can be found in the south, east, central, and southeast of Asia. It’s a wild dog that looks like a red fox and gray wolf which was popular before but is presently seen in just some parts of Asia.

It has other names which are Indian wild dog, Asian wild dog, mountain wolf, etc. It dwells mostly in the forests, scrub, pine forests, thick jungles, steppes, and mountains. It is considered to be an endangered species.

5. Dik-Dik


This is one of the animals that start with D. A dik-dik is a small antelope that weighs about 15 pounds and whose height ranges from 12 to 16 inches. It dwells in the bushlands of eastern and southern Africa. It’s in the genus Madoqua and has existed for about 10 years.

Dik – Dik is known for its loud whistling sound and it was named after the female’s alarm calls. Is prey of cheetahs which happens to be its favorite prey. Dik-dik consists of four species, which are Salt’s dik-dik Madoqua Saltiana, Silver dik-dik Madoqua Piacentinii, Günther’s dik-dik Madoqua Guentheri and Kirk’s dik-dik Madoqua kirkii

This animal is classified as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List.

Dalmatian is a very vibrant, sensitive, and lively dog. The dog loves children and is very loyal to their family, according to some Dalmatian experts, this dog can be too energetic for kids that are very small.

The Dachshund is a hound dog breed that is short-legged, long-bodied, wire-haired, and comes in different colors. It is also called sausage dog, wiener dog, and badger dog; it is native to Germany.

This dog is very popular in the United States due to its famous body and charming nature. is strong-willed, lively, and can be mischievous. It is also intelligent and can be a good watchdog. It is critically endangered and on the verge of extinction. Dachshunds made it to our list of animals that start with D.

8. Dassie Rat

This is one of the animals on our list that begins with the letter D, and it is the only existing member of its genus, which is part of the Petromus and Petromuridae family.

It is a rodent commonly found in central and western Namibia, southwestern Angola, and northwestern South Africa. In Afrikaans, “dassie” means “hyrax,” and they are both in the area.

Dassie rat looks like a squirrel but has a long tail and is always seen in rocky outcroppings and is highly regarded because is the only existing member of the Petromuridae family.

Discus fish, also known colloquially as Symphysodon, are members of the Cichlidae family and originated in the flooded forests and floodplain lakes of South America’s lowland Amazon river basin.

They happen to be very popular as freshwater aquarium fish because of their splendid color and beauty. It is considered to be the “King of the Aquarium“. They are not currently classified as threatened by the IUCN Red List.

Dormice are night animals commonly found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Their name comes from their long, dormant hibernation period of six months or more, as well as the fact that they are critically endangered.

Dotterel, also known as Eurasian dotterel, is a small wader in the plover family of birds. It is a brown and black-striped bird with broad brown eyes and yellow legs. They are not vocal birds, and they are endangered species.

It is a large, grey-brown, fat animal, a marine mammal with a fluked tail that is flattened just like the tail of a whale. It is one of four surviving species of the order Sirenia, which also includes manatee species.

It happens to be the only existing species of the family Dugongidae.  Meanwhile, Dugongs are currently listed as ‘vulnerable’ worldwide on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Dragonfish, which are also called sea moths, belong to the family of Stomiidae, devious predators that lie in wait to ambush unsuspecting crustaceans and fish despite being very strong swimmers.

Almost all of them have dark skin and disguise themselves from their prey. They have been declared “not extinct,” largely by NOAA.

15. Dromedary


The last on our list of animals that start with D is Dromedary. The dromedary also called the dromedary camel, one-humped camel, or Arabian camel, of the genus Camelus, belongs to the family Camelidae. with a single hump on its back.

It is the tallest among the three species of camel; adult males stand 1.8–2.4 m at the shoulder, while females are about 1.7–1.9 m tall. Its origins can be traced back to the Middle East and Northern Africa.

 Dromedary camels are said to have been domesticated for thousands of years as swift desert mounts and pack animals.

There are no longer any true wild populations existing in nature. Nonetheless, feral dromedaries exist throughout their species and in central Australia, behaving exactly like wild populations.

It has a woolly coat color and looks tousled from seasonal exfoliating. It is also listed as ”Critically Endangered” by the IUCN
